Famous for its stews, sandwiches and, of course, tapas, Madrid showcases culinary specialties from other parts of Spain. While finding vegan restaurants or vegetarian restaurants may seem like a challenge, there are actually plenty of options from which to choose. To kickstart your vegan tour through Madrid, here are some tasty vegan spots to try:
Located on Calle Recoletos 13 in the center of Madrid, Mudrá uses vegetables, fruits, cereals, legumes, nuts, mushrooms, seeds, superfoods and flowers to present a healthy cuisine full of flavor. Favorites include the artichoke tiradito and canelloni tikka masala, while the vegetarian sushi is also a big hit with rolls such as Uramaki dragon and Philadelphia roll.
Just a few blocks from Plaza Mayor, La Encomienda is a modern and relaxed space where both vegans (and non-vegans alike) can enjoy homemade vegan cuisine. Along with a large repertoire of organic wines, craft beers from Madrid and organic juices, its menu features organic and local products. Start with the dried tomato and Parmesan croquettes before taking a bite out of the Burger Cusqueña, saving just a little bit of room for cheesecake with red fruit jam and guava sauce.
With two locations in Madrid, one down the block from Plaza de la Luna and the other a few blocks from Plaza de España, Vega offers plant-based dishes and desserts in a compact space. At the forefront of creative cuisine and gastronomic fusion, Vega presents dishes with international flair. From blue corn tacos to Callos a la Madrielena to Catalan cream for dessert, everything is homemade.
Applying haute cuisine techniques to achieve even more refined results with 100 percent vegetable ingredients, Hungarian chef Jùlia Török presents a raw vegan menu at this bistro. Alongside El Retiro Park, the cozy and calm atmosphere at the bistro presents new dishes with complex preparations using fresh and natural ingredients, prioritizing those from organic production. The popular lasagna is made on the spot and requires a chef dedicated solely to it, as it results from four different preparations and 28 ingredients.
The hip restaurant near Lavapiés subway station provides healthy and suitable menus using natural products. With all dishes made from scratch, the menu is made up of burgers, croquettes, salads, quesadillas and more, along with a menu of the day. Stars of the menu are the Milanese, the BBQ-pulled jackfruit tacos and the Vegan Queer Burger. For something sweet, they offer a chocolate and cream cake, and a “cheesfake.”
