Food & Drink

As the travel industry evolves, trends evolve right along with it. Recent trends range from the elegant and modern to the downright strange. Regardless, tourism is attempting to reach every demographic, interest and short-lived fad. Foodies will drop whatever menu they are holding and run to the industry’s latest trend: food-themed hotels.

A few examples to whet your appetite: The Adelphi Hotel in Melbourne, Australia invites you to “engage your senses” in their rooms with a pillow scent menu, a minibar that is stocked daily with various candies and a luxury restaurant called Om Nom, aping the sound made when Cookie Monster eats his cookies.

The aptly named Food Hotel in Neuwied, Germany, is home to its own food market and features guestrooms with themes like Coca-Cola, beer, cherries, pomegranates and cheese, complete with theme-matching accessories.

Toronto, Canada, is home to the Gladstone Hotel which houses 37 unique rooms each designed by a different artist, guaranteeing individuality. The Surreal Gourmet room was designed by a television host from Food Network Canada and includes marshmallow pillows, a wine-glass chandelier and a Fruit Loops armoire.

Taking it a step further but no longer in existence is the Tate & Lyle Sugars Cake Hotel, a London hotel that was completely edible. Guests arrived and were welcome to snack into the hotel where there were eight more “tasting rooms.”

Given the popularity of this trend, it would be wise to save room for dessert.
