Results of the annual United Nations World Happiness Report reveal Finland as the happiest country in the world for the eighth consecutive year.
The report emphasizes the importance of social connections to overall happiness. Finland’s beloved sauna tradition contributes to the country’s global happiness ranking, with 90 percent of Finns bathing in a sauna at least once per week. This centuries-old tradition offers physiological, psychological, social and emotional benefits. Popular saunas include Sipoonjoki Sauna, Rajaportin sauna, Sompasauna and Järvelä.
“Finnish sauna is a sanctuary of happiness: it is good for your health, it is a safe space to relax and wash off the stress, it is taking care of social needs and feeling of belonging to community, it is an integral part of national character and a source of creativity,” said Heli Jimenez, senior director, international marketing, Visit Finland.
The top 10 happiest countries in the world are:
- Finland
- Denmark
- Iceland
- Sweden
- Netherlands
- Costa Rica
- Norway
- Israel
- Luxembourg
- Mexico
Rankings are based on data gathered via a Gallup World Poll of more than 100,000 individuals in 140 countries and territories. Visit the website for more information about methodology.
