The original sanctuary was founded in 1931 to protect the 11 surviving elephants of the region, expanding their population to more than 600. The park also houses 48 black rhinos and recently reintroduced the Transvaal lion and spotted hyena. One of the most popular sites to see are the legions of meerkats living along the Woodlands-Harpoor Loop.
