During this spooky time of year, visiting a haunted hotel is a must-do activity for all ghost hunters and horror fanatics. Properties all over the world have stories of ghostly encounters and unexplained occurrences. Visit one of these hotels for a stay you won’t soon forget!
The Stanley Hotel
Located in picturesque Estes Park, Colo., The Stanley Hotel is the inspiration for The Overlook Hotel in Stephen King’s The Shining. Guests report sounds of children laughing and running on the fourth floor — the hotel’s most haunted — and find their luggage mysteriously unpacked and placed in drawers. The Stanley Kubrick version of The Shining plays on a continuous loop on one of the hotel’s television channels.
Ballygally Castle Hotel
Former lady of the castle Isobella Shaw haunts the Northern Ireland hotel. Guests often feel a ghostly presence, hear mysterious noises and even see a green mist hovering over the property.
The Langham, London
England’s first grand hotel, The Langham, London, has a storied history. Famous past guests, including Napoleon III, have since been spotted at the property. A German prince who leapt to his death prior to World War II is often seen walking through doors, particularly Room 333 (the hotel’s most haunted).
Skirrid Mountain Inn
Dating back to 1100, Skirrid Mountain Inn in Wales was once a Court of Law. More than 180 men were sentenced to death by hanging right from the beams of the building. Today, guests claim to feel ropes tightening around their necks in their sleep, with some showing visible marks days later.
The Hollywood Roosevelt
A popular haunt of famous guests like Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift, The Hollywood Roosevelt in Los Angeles, Calif., is still home to many celebrity spirits. Guests and staff report seeing a blonde woman, thought to be Marilyn Monroe, appear in the mirror of her former suite. Don’t be surprised if you hear the sounds of Montgomery Clift playing his trumpet from Room 928.
The Gettysburg Hotel
This Pennsylvania hotel’s long history dates back to 1797. Used as a hospital during the Civil War, guests frequently see Union soldiers in full uniform strolling the halls. A nurse named Rachel is known to rummage through guests’ belongings.
