XL Diner is one of the most revered restaurants in not just Ålesund, but all of Norway. It specializes in bacalao, and is touted as the best bacalao restaurant in Europe. After spending an evening here, I might have to agree.
XL offers three different bacalao, or clipfish, dishes. While each sounded delicious, I opted for the bacalao vizcaina, the Spanish-style option. The restaurant’s location near the harbor means all of the fish is fresh, and it certainly showed in both taste and presentation. The meal was cooked perfectly and looked like something out a fine-dining establishment, though the prices were about average for the region.
The wait staff here was topnotch, and friendly. They were happy to answer any questions I had about the food and drinks. Many of them also spoke English, so there wasn’t much in the way of a language barrier, always helpful when trying new food! The chocolate fondant dessert was also incredible, and I would probably return just for that alone.
The only complaint I had is the restaurant was packed, which I’m told is normal here. As far as downsides, that only really says good things about the food. Be sure to book your spot in advance if you want to get a table!
