Earlier this month, United Airlines announced MileagePlus members can pool points. Up to five friends and family members can now combine frequent-flyer miles to redeem for travel.
But will this actually see more members redeem rewards? In short, yes. Infrequent travelers who never could generate enough miles to redeem for travel can now do so thanks to this new feature. (Just be sure to find family members and friends who travel often so you can benefit from their points).
How can you create and manage a miles pool?
It’s free and easy. Any MileagePlus member 18 years or older can start a miles pool and take on the role of pool leader. The pool leader can then invite MileagePlus members to join. These invited members can be family (including kids), friends or a mix, so long as they’re a MileagePlus member. A maximum of five can be in a miles pool. Members can decide how many miles they wish to contribute to the pool upon joining.
Every pool member can contribute their MileagePlus miles to the shared pool. The pool leader manages the miles pool and can authorize pool members to redeem miles.
